OVERVIEW

The 2017-18 Global Scholars curriculum, Feeding Our Cities, explores the global food system and its impact on cities around the world. Students learn about nutrition and its influence on public health. They discover the complex systems needed to grow, secure the safety of, and distribute food to the world. At the end of the year, students create a Community Action Project to address a global food issue within their local community. Prior to program start, educators receive detailed lesson plans, digital student workbooks, and supplemental resources.

STRUCTURE Global Scholars runs from late September through early June, with a schedule that allows for flexibility. Each week of the curriculum requires a minimum of two hours of instructional time, which includes time to complete an in-class activity and post in an online discussion. Each school decides how to schedule instruction. For example, a class might meet for one two-hour session per week, two one-hour sessions, or another variation. Following the introductory unit, units include extra calendar weeks to account for school holidays and testing schedules.
